Bi-fold doors are made up of multiple glass panels connected by hinges.

When you open them, the panels fold back on themselves like concertina doors and stack neatly to one side (or both sides, depending on the configuration).

This gives you a much wider opening than you’d get with French doors or standard patio doors, letting in natural light.

A typical bi-fold door system has between two and seven panels.

One panel usually acts as a traffic door.

This allows the doors to open on its own like a normal door for everyday use without folding the whole set back. Great for when you just want to pop out to the garden or let the dog in without opening the full run.

The panels run on a smooth aluminium track at the top and bottom, with rollers that guide each panel as it folds.

A low-threshold option keeps the bottom track almost flush with the floor. This is great for accessibility concerns.

Every bi-fold door we install comes with multi-point locking as standard. That means the door locks at multiple points along the frame, not just at the handle.

Shoot bolts at the top and bottom of each panel pin them into the frame, and the locking mechanism engages automatically when you lift the handle.

The hinges are anti-lift, so the panels can’t be removed from the outside.

And because the folding mechanism keeps all the panels connected when locked, there’s no weak point for anyone to exploit.

Bi-fold doors vs sliding patio doors

Sliding patio doors have larger individual panes of glass. This means the doors open to uninterrupted views and fewer sight lines.

But a sliding door only opens to half the frame width.

This one panel always stays fixed while the other slides behind it.
