What is Laminated Glass?
Laminated glass is a type of safety glass which is designed to stay in place when it breaks. Better for both safety and security than regular glass, it can be used in double glazing for windows and doors, including sliding sash windows.
But how is laminated glass made?
Laminated safety glass is made from two (or more) sheets of glass that are bonded together with a strong, transparent inner layer. The inner layer is typically made from polyvinyl butyral (PVB). If the glass cracks or smashes, the interlayer should hold the fragments together safely.
The production process involves placing the plastic layer between glass sheets and applying heat and pressure to create an inseparable bond. The end result is essentially a glass sandwich offering remarkable safety and security benefits for your home.
Laminated Glass Uses
Laminated glass is used for a variety of different things. These include:
- Front doors and side panels which are common targets for break-ins.
- Ground-floor windows for added security.
- Patio doors where traffic is higher.
- Juliet balconies and glass landings where the risk of danger is higher for smashes.
- Car windshields and windows as protection for collisions.
The glass can also be used in high quality double glazing for doors and windows. From sliding sash windows to patio doors, there are so many opportunities to use laminated glass within your home.
Benefits of Laminated Glass
Safety Glass for Better Security
Staying together in one piece and higher in thickness, laminated glass is tough to break through quickly. The delay and effort it takes to create an opening can deter burglars from entering your property.
Glass Panes Perfect for Busy Areas
Laminated glass is perfect for families or busy households.
The layers of glass held together by PVB mean that any big bumps shouldn’t shatter glass shards all over your property. Instead, hold it securely in place.
Noise Reduction
Laminated glass offers more benefits than just safety.
The interlayers can add a barrier for extra sound insulation. This reduces noise and leaves you with a more peaceful environment.
UV Protection
The interlayer of laminated glass absorbs nearly all harmful UV rays, blocking their access into a property.
Protect your interiors from fading and allow your furniture, carpets, flooring, and artwork to stay looking newer for longer.
Laminated Glass in Double Glazing
As we mentioned, laminated glass is perfect for double glazing features.
Double glazing units are two individual panes of glass which are separated by a spacer bar and hold the glass together. This sealed space is filled with a safe gas or air that prevents heat transfer and improves energy efficiency.
Laminated glass can be used instead of the regular glass pane. It can replace either the inside pane, outside pane, or, for ultimate protection, both panes of glass.
Because one sheet of laminated glass already comprises of two (or more) layers that are bonded together. Laminated double glazing brings added safety, security, and noise reduction than standard double units.

Alternative Safety Glass – Toughened Glass or Tempered Glass
Laminated glass isn’t the only safety glass on the market.
Toughened glass (also known as tempered glass) is a different type of glass that provides security benefits.
Instead of being bonded together, toughened glass is made through extreme heating and cooling which gives it slightly different properties and benefits.
