Window energy ratings explained (WER and U-values)
Before we begin, it is important to be familiar with the two measurements that come up most often when discussing energy efficiency for windows.
Window Energy Ratings and U-values.
Both describe the window’s energy performance, but they measure it differently.
Window Energy Ratings (WER)
The Window Energy Rating scheme is run by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC).
Window manufacturers submit products for independent testing, and the energy efficiency of their products is rated on a scale from G (lowest) to A (highest).
Windows with an energy rating of A are the best-performing band available from UK window manufacturers. The WER looks at the whole window (glass, frame, and seals together) and accounts for both heat loss and solar gain.

U-values explained
A U-value measures heat flow through the whole window in watts per square metre per kelvin (W/m²K).
Lower is better.
The lower the U-value, the less heat passes through the window per degree of temperature difference between inside and outside.

The most energy efficient glazing options
Double glazed windows with low-E glass
Double glazing seals two panes of glass into an insulated glazing unit with a cavity between them.
The energy efficient type of glass used in each pane, and the gas fill in the cavity, both determine how well the unit performs thermally.
Low-E glass (low emissivity glass) has a thin metallic coating on the surface facing the cavity. The coating reflects infrared heat back into the room while still letting visible light through the glazed window.
Without low-E, heat passes through the glass towards the cold side of the window and is lost to the outside.
All of our double glazed units include low-E glass as standard.
Every cavity is filled with argon, an inert gas denser than air, which slows heat movement across the cavity more effectively than air-filled units of the same specification.

Triple glazing
