Essential Supplies for Cleaning uPVC Window Frames

Before you start cleaning your uPVC window frames, you are going to need to gather a few supplies. Luckily, you should probably have these lying around the house, making the job cheap and easy to do.

Firstly, you’ll need some warm water and a bucket for your cleaning solution.

We suggest using microfibre cloths as they won’t scratch the surface of your frames. And for harder to reach spots? An old toothbrush or a soft-bristled brush comes in handy as a scrubber.

You are more than welcome to purchase specialist uPVC cleaning agents.  However, we find that more often than not, standard washing up liquid or a gentle detergent will do the job just fine.

White vinegar is brilliant for tackling more stubborn marks that soap won’t shift.

Finally, make sure you have some clean, dry cloths ready for the wipe-down and drying stage.

Step-by-Step Guide to Clean uPVC Window Frames

1. Preparing the Area

Start by clearing away any loose debris and dust from your window frames.

Using a brush or a vacuum works wonders for removing dust, cobwebs and loose dirt from surfaces and corners.

A top tip is to ensure your window is open. This gives you better access to all parts of the frame and ensures you can thoroughly clean the tracks and grooves where dirt likes to hide.

2. Basic Cleaning Maintenance

First, fill a bucket with warm water and add a small squirt of washing up liquid.

Next, dip your microfibre cloth into this soapy mixture and wring it out so it’s just damp rather than dripping wet. This is important to protect the paint, varnish, or polish that may be on your window frames.

Then, thoroughly wipe all surfaces of the window frame, giving extra attention to the bottom sections where dirt tends to collect.

For those tricky grooves, corners and areas around the window seals, a soft-bristled brush will help dislodge any stubborn dirt.

After the main clean, it’s important to rinse with clean water using a fresh cloth to remove any soap residue.

Finally, dry everything thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth to prevent water marks appearing later.

3. Removing Stubborn Stains and Discolouration

uPVC frames can sometimes attract stubborn marks that need a little bit more attention to remove.

An easy DIY white vinegar solution often does the trick.

Simply mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water, apply it to the stained areas with a cloth, leave it to work for a few minutes, then wipe clean and rinse thoroughly.

For even tougher jobs, a non-abrasive cream cleaner can effectively remove yellowing or persistent marks.

Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, rub gently, then rinse and dry.

An alternative, window cleaner products and sprays specifically designed for uPVC can solve the issue of difficult stains and discolouration. Just make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions to the letter to protect your window sills and frames.

Cautions When Cleaning uPVC Window Frames

While uPVC material is generally quite tough, it is still important to be careful during the cleaning process.

Here are several things to be careful with when cleaning.

1. Never Use Abrasive Cleaners

Although uPVC is known for its durability, it is made of a plastic that can be prone to scratching.

For this reason, never use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or wire wool. These can create tiny scratches in the surface.

2. Prevent Paint Stains by Using Neutral Products

Bleach-based products are best avoided since they can cause discolouration of the uPVC. If you are looking for a stronger solution than vinegar, make sure to use products designed to be used as uPVC cleaners.

Also, make sure to use a white cloth (or an old coloured cloth to clean). New coloured clothes can be prone to dye transfer when wet, which may stain your uPVC paint.

3. Go Slow, No Shortcuts!

We have seen first hand the damage of using pressure washers on windows.

Although they may seem efficient, they can force water into seals and joints, causing severe damage.

Not only that, but they can even cause the window glass to break.

Make sure you go slow, and use your hands and not a pressure washer to avoid irreversible damage.

Maintaining uPVC Window Frames Year-Round

For the best performance and appearance, we suggest establishing a regular cleaning schedule for your uPVC window frames.

A light cleaning every one to two months will prevent the build-up of grime and keep everything looking fresh.

We recommend performing a deeper clean twice a year, with spring and autumn being ideal times for this.

It’s worth giving extra attention to your windows after periods of bad weather when dirt and debris can accumulate more quickly.

Regularly check and clean drainage channels to ensure water can drain away properly, which prevents potential damage. And don’t forget to inspect seals regularly for signs of wear or damage, as catching problems early can save you money on repairs.
