Why uPVC window frames stain and discolour – By Glasgow’s double glazing experts
uPVC is a durable, low-maintenance material, but it still sits outside catching dust, pollen and traffic fumes every day.
That build-up of dirt and grime is what dulls a frame’s finish over time.
General grime and dust
Airborne dust and dirt settle into the texture of the plastic and grip on.
Left long enough, a light film like this needs a proper clean rather than a quick wipe.
Brown or yellow discolouration
Brown streaks often trace back to rust from screws, hinges or a nearby drainpipe, running down the frame each time it rains.
It can be tempting to paint over rust, but withhold the urge as the rust will bleed through. A good clean is all you need to get the problem sorted!
Yellowing is different: it’s usually UV exposure breaking down the surface of the plastic itself, which is why south-facing frames discolour faster than shaded ones.
Mould and damp marks
Black or green spots near the bottom of a frame are almost always mould, feeding on moisture that’s had nowhere to drain.
It shows up most on frames that sit in shade or get little airflow.
What you’ll need to clean upvc window frames
The simplest way to clean your uPVC windows is warm soapy water: warm water, washing-up liquid, and a soft cloth or sponge.
Keep a separate bucket of clean water nearby for rinsing.
A dedicated uPVC cleaner, cream cleaner, or similar cleaning solution earns its place for tougher grime.
A soft-bristled brush gets into corners a cloth can’t reach, and a dry microfibre cloth finishes the job without streaks.
Wear gloves to protect your hands if you’re using anything stronger than washing-up liquid. It’s a good habit even for a routine clean.
How to clean upvc window frames step by step
- Clear loose debris first. A quick vacuum or a dry brush lifts cobwebs, dead insects and grit before they turn into scratches once you start wiping.
- Wash with warm soapy water. Work a soft cloth or sponge over the whole frame in circular motions. Scrub corners and recesses a little harder, since dirt collects there first.
- Rinse with clean water. Wipe the frames down with a second cloth dipped in plain water to lift the soap residue before it dries into streaks.
- Dry with a microfibre cloth. Wiping the frame dry stops water spots forming and gives you a clear look at what’s actually still stained.
- Treat what’s left. Anything that survives a normal wash needs a targeted approach, covered next.
Removing stubborn stains from upvc window frames
A plain wash lifts everyday dirt, but stubborn stains need something with a bit more work behind it.
Test any product on a small area first, tucked out of sight, before treating the whole frame.
Brown stains and rust marks
A paste made from bicarbonate of soda and a little water works on rust streaks and general staining alike.
Use a soft cloth to work it in, leave it for a few minutes, then rinse the frames with clean water.
Yellowing and dull white uPVC
A proprietary paste cleaner, sold for exactly this job, is usually the most reliable way to get uPVC window frames white again.
Apply a small amount to a damp cloth, work it into the surface, then buff off with a dry one.
White vinegar and water, mixed in equal parts, is a gentler option for lighter yellowing and needs a bit of elbow grease.
It won’t shift tougher stains or heavy discolouration the way a paste cleaner will.
Mould and damp spots
A diluted bleach solution kills mould effectively, but use it sparingly and rinse thoroughly afterwards.
Frequent or neat bleach use can dull the finish over time, so keep it for mould specifically rather than everyday cleaning.
What to avoid when cleaning upvc window frames
Avoid using scouring pads, wire wool or other abrasive tools, since they scratch the surface and trap dirt faster than before.
Once uPVC frames are scratched, no amount of cleaning brings the original finish back.
White spirit, WD-40 and other solvent-based products can damage the surface and leave it looking worse, despite popping up as a quick fix online.
Neat bleach used regularly does similar long-term harm.
Denatured alcohol has its uses on stubborn adhesive residue, but test it on a hidden patch first since it can affect some finishes.
Keeping upvc window frames clean
A quick wipe every few months with warm soapy water helps prevent dirt buildup long before it turns into a proper stain.
Frames near a busy road or under trees need it more often than a sheltered spot.
Clearing gutters and each window sill of leaves and debris cuts down on the run-off that causes brown streaks in the first place.
Good airflow around a frame also helps keep mould from taking hold.
Wipe down the frames every time you clean the glass.
A regular window cleaning routine like that helps keep your uPVC window frames stain-free, and the same routine works for uPVC windows and doors alike.
When staining means more than a clean
Most discolouration is just dirt, and a proper clean sorts it. Occasionally the frame itself is failing underneath, past the point cleaning can fix.
Deep pitting, cracking, or a yellow tinge that returns within weeks of a thorough clean can point to a failing frame.

uPVC window frame stain questions answered
How do you get brown stains out of uPVC window frames?
A bicarbonate of soda paste lifts most brown staining and rust marks. Apply it with a soft cloth, leave it briefly, then rinse the frames with clean water and dry.
How do I get my uPVC window frames white again?
A dedicated uPVC cleaning paste is the most reliable option for restoring white uPVC. Diluted white vinegar helps with lighter yellowing, but won’t shift heavier discolouration on its own.
Can you use a paste cleaner on uPVC?
Yes, a proprietary paste cleaner is a common choice for tackling stains on uPVC that won’t shift with a normal wash. Apply with a damp cloth and buff off, and test a small area first if you’re unsure.
Can you use WD-40 to clean uPVC?
We wouldn’t recommend it. WD-40 and similar solvent-based products can damage the surface of uPVC rather than clean it, leaving a dull patch that’s hard to fix.
Can you use bleach or vinegar to clean uPVC windows?
Diluted vinegar is fine for general cleaning and light yellowing. Diluted bleach works well on mould specifically, but frequent or neat use can dull the finish, so keep it for mould rather than routine cleaning.
Why do uPVC window frames turn yellow?
UV exposure breaks down the surface of the plastic over years, which is why south-facing frames yellow faster than shaded ones. Regular cleaning slows the process but won’t stop it completely.
