U-value measurement – Guide by double glazing Glasgow

A U-value measures the rate of heat transfer through a building element for every degree of temperature difference between inside and outside. The lower that rate, the less heat your home loses through it.

The kelvin in W/m²K is simply the scientific unit for that temperature difference, and the watt measures the energy escaping.

You don’t need either unit to use the figure day to day, just the rule that lower is better.

The calculation behind that number accounts for every layer in a building element, including the frame and spacer alongside the glass.

Two building components can share identical glass and still end up with different U-values once those other layers are factored in.

Why more panes and gaps lower the number

Insulation, glazing, and cavity design all affect that transfer rate. A single pane of glass has a poor U-value because heat moves through it almost as freely as it would through an open gap.

Add a second pane with a sealed gas-filled cavity between them, and you slow that heat transfer down considerably. Add a third pane, and you slow it further still.

Good building insulation works the same way in a wall or roof. Trapped air and low thermal conductivity materials both push that thermal conductance figure down.

Insulated glazing does the same job through glass.

Is a lower or higher U-value better

Lower is better, every time. A U-value of 1.0 sounds like a small number, but it’s only an average result for a modern window.

Our standard double glazing comes in lower than that at 1.4 W/m²K, with options to reduce even further down to 1.2 W/m²K. Our triple glazing goes further again, down to 0.8 W/m²K.

Every step down that scale means less heat leaving your home through the glass, and less money spent replacing it with your heating.

U-values differ from R-values

You’ll sometimes see R-values mentioned alongside U-values, and the two measure opposite things. An R-value measures thermal resistance: how well a material resists heat flow.

A U-value measures thermal transmittance: how much heat actually gets through. Roughly speaking, a U-value is what you get when you flip an R-value upside down.

UK building regulations and window specifications use U-values, so that’s the figure you’ll see on any quote we give you. R-values turn up more in insulation product specifications for walls and lofts.

Thermal mass is a separate idea again.

This is how much heat a material can store and release slowly, rather than how fast heat passes through it. It affects the performance of building materials like brick and stone, but it isn’t part of your window’s U-value.

What counts as good U-values under building regulations

Building regulations set a maximum U-value that replacement windows must achieve.

Meeting the minimum isn’t the same as getting the best available performance. Our standard double glazing sits the regulatory line, while our triple-glazed range comes in well below it at 0.8 W/m²K.

Moving from 1.4 to 0.8 W/m²K cuts the heat lost through that window substantially.

Over a Scottish winter, that difference turns into a noticeably lower heating bill.

For comparison, a solid wall in an older Scottish home often sits well above 2.0 W/m²K unless it’s had cavity or internal insulation added.

Your windows can end up outperforming your walls once they’re upgraded.

Changing the U-value of your glazing

The number of glass panes is the biggest factor behind your quote, which is why triple glazing comfortably beats double.

We fill our cavities with argon rather than plain air. Argon conducts heat less readily, so it gives you a lower U-value for the same glass thickness.

The metal spacer bar that holds your glass panes apart also affects the figure, more than its size would suggest.

Your frame contributes its own U-value too, separate from the glass.

A low-emissivity coating on the glass itself adds one more layer of improvement. It reflects heat back into your room while still letting daylight through, lowering the U-value without changing how the window looks.

Why your U-value matters for your energy bill

A lower U-value keeps more of your heating inside your home rather than leaking through the glass. Over a full winter, that difference shows up directly on what you pay to stay warm.

You’ll feel the difference too. A cold spot near an old window, or a draught that never quite goes away, is usually a sign of a poor U-value.

Your U-value connects directly to your window energy rating too, which is the letter grade you’ll see quoted alongside it.

Where to find your current U-value

If you already have double glazing, check any paperwork from the original installation first. A building control certificate usually states the U-value the windows were rated at when fitted.

That paperwork often goes missing over the years, and older double glazing rarely performs as well now as it did when new. Seals degrade and gas fills slowly escape, so the U-value on record stops matching reality.
