What corrosion resistance and corrosion protection mean for double glazing
Corrosion happens when metal reacts with oxygen and moisture and breaks down, usually as rust.
It’s an ongoing chemical process that steadily weakens whatever it’s eating into.
Resistance to it depends on what a material is actually made from.
Metal can corrode. Plastic, glass, and most types of stone can’t, because the reaction needs metal to start.
Corrosion protection is simply choosing or treating a material so that reaction can’t get going.
Why a marine environment makes corrosion worse
Salt in sea spray is the real difference.
Wind carries fine salt particles inland from the water, and they land on anything exposed, including window frames, hinges, and handles.
Salt contains chloride, and chloride speeds up the chemical reaction that causes rust. Metal near the coast corrodes faster than the same metal fifty miles inland.
Towns along the Firth of Forth, the Firth of Tay, and the Ayrshire coast all sit in this higher-exposure zone.
Aberdeen’s east-facing coastline takes the same battering straight off the North Sea.
Pitting corrosion and Scotland’s climate
Chloride concentrates its attack in small points, a pattern called pitting corrosion.
Pitting corrosion is why coastal hardware often fails at specific spots instead of wearing down evenly all over.
Scotland’s climate adds another layer on top of the salt. Long spells of damp weather and high humidity mean metal rarely gets a chance to dry out fully between exposures. That constant moisture keeps the chemical reaction running without a break.
Why uPVC frames don’t corrode
uPVC is a rigid plastic. It has no metal content in the frame itself, so the rust and pitting that affect steel simply can’t happen to it.
Older properties along the coast often still have their original steel-framed windows, sometimes called Crittall windows, or timber frames from decades ago.
Steel frames rust visibly within a few years near the sea. Timber swells, cracks, and rots in the same damp, salty air.
uPVC does neither, because there’s no metal to corrode and no wood to decay.
A frame that isn’t fighting rust or rot keeps its structural strength for decades.

The hardware needs checking too
A uPVC frame won’t corrode, but the hardware fitted to it usually will if it’s the wrong grade.
Hinges, multi-point locking mechanisms, handles, and fixing screws are typically stainless steel, and not all stainless steel resists salt equally well.
Grade 304 stainless steel is common and performs fine inland. Near the coast, grade 316 is the better choice: it contains molybdenum, which gives it noticeably stronger resistance to the pitting that salt causes.
Ask what grade of stainless steel is used in the hardware before you buy, especially close to the sea.
Regular maintenance of seals and moving parts also slows corrosion down, since a well-lubricated hinge sheds salt water rather than holding onto it.
Doors face the same coastal risk
Doors deal with the same hardware issue as windows.
Multi-point locking systems, hinges, and letterbox fittings on a composite or uPVC door are usually stainless steel too.
A door’s letterbox flap takes constant opening and closing, which wears protective coatings faster than a window hinge that moves far less often.
A front door on a coastal property often gets hit harder than most windows, since it usually faces the street and the weather together.
The same grade 316 recommendation applies here.
Signs salt air is already affecting your windows
A handle that used to turn smoothly can start needing real force, and a hinge that once swung freely can begin to catch or grind.
These are common early signs, and they usually show up on the hardware years before the frame itself shows any damage.
Rust streaks below a hinge or lock are another giveaway, even faint orange ones.
On uPVC, that streak comes entirely from the metal component itself.

What a coastal survey checks
A free survey for a coastal property looks at more than glazing and frame size.
We check what hardware grade is already fitted and how exposed the property is to prevailing wind and salt spray. We also look for any early pitting on existing fixings.
That assessment shapes what we recommend. Light pitting on hardware that’s otherwise sound usually means a grade 316 swap.
Frames that are visibly warped, rotted, or already leaking usually mean a full replacement.
Coastal corrosion resistance: common questions
Do uPVC windows corrode?
No. Corrosion is a chemical reaction that only affects metal, and uPVC contains none. The frame itself can’t rust, pit, or corrode in any coastal environment, however close to the sea it’s fitted.
What stainless steel grade should coastal hardware use?
Grade 316 stainless steel, sometimes labelled marine grade, is the standard recommendation for hardware fitted within a mile or two of the sea. It contains molybdenum, a mineral that resists salt pitting far better than the chromium-only alloy in grade 304.
How is this different from normal window wear inland?
Inland, hardware wears down slowly through use, dust, and general ageing. Near the coast, chloride in the salt actively speeds up rust on any exposed metal. The same handle or hinge can show damage years earlier than it would forty miles from the sea.
How often should coastal hardware be checked?
Twice a year is a reasonable minimum this close to the sea, once before winter and once after. Check that handles turn smoothly, hinges move without grinding, and there’s no rust starting around any fixing screw.
What if my windows already show signs of corrosion?
Isolated rust on a hinge or handle doesn’t always mean the whole window needs replacing. Sometimes the hardware itself can be swapped for a marine-grade equivalent, though that depends on the window’s age and condition. A free survey will tell you which route makes more sense.
